Chairman's Blog

Floyd's updates on the latest club news and races.

17th January 2012

As we enter a new year we can reflect on what has probably been the most significant and successful years that the Harriers has had in its 26 year history.

NUMBERS
Last year saw the club grow likes it’s never done before as we welcomed more new members.
The key thing to this is the Early Birds and welcoming group that have played a major part in our success on retaining members. Well done to Denise, Liane and all your helpers.

COACHING and TRAINING
Our coaching staff is now headed up by Alan Probert who has been doing Saturday morning training sessions throughout the year which are always well attended.

Tim Erskine has been forging a close partnership with KAN and has organised several well attended sessions throughout the year. We are looking to train more coaches so if you fancy it why not give it a go.

KGP, RACING & XC

We have seen success in KGP like no other year with the Ladies winning for the third year in succession and the men coming second for the first time.

Racing in general has seen many prizes for Harriers throughout the year.

XC gets tougher every year with no less than 18 teams competing and always at least 30 Harriers running and doing well.

Well done to the team Captains Sharon & Adrian along with KGP & XC co-ordinator Dave Hattersley.

SOCIAL

We have had more social events this year all well attended with Sarah and her team really pushing out the boat with trips to London to see shows, Wine Tasting, Comedy Night, Summer BBQ, Firework night, Children’s Party, Christmas Bash & post-Christmas bash, well done to all that helped out to make this happen.

TRAVEL

The club saw 30 or so members go to Cologne in October with a trip planned for Majorca this year well done to Dave Keeling.

RACES

Harriers have successfully staged Weald of Kent 10, Maidstone Half Marathon & Turkey Run all well attended and a big thanks to everybody who gave up there time to make this happen.

COMMITTEE

A big thank you to all the committee that give up their free time to make it all run smoothly

FINALLY

As I have said the club has gone from strength to strength and the main contributors are the members, without none of this would happen.

So keep coming, keep enjoying it and most of all let’s keep Maidstone Harriers the best club there is and have another successful year.

Happy New Year Harriers now let’s run……..

Thanks

Floyd

Sunday July 3rd

It’s been a while as the late spring has been very busy for both me and the Harriers.

On the Social front the team have been busy at the Hazlitt to see Mel in his play, Leeds Castle for Go Ape and last Friday Katherine Jenkins at Kings Hill, all well attended and all had a great time.

Next event being the club BBQ on 16th July, all are welcome and there will be a raffle with proceeds going to Breast Cancer, so let’s have some prizes and dig deep for your tickets, it’s all going to a good cause.

On the running front MH are doing well in all races competed both the Men & Women are out in front in the KGP and are looking good going into the second half of the year. Well done to all if you want to see the latest stats they are on the website.

Club Championship is also going well with the next race being the Cliffe Woods 10K & Dartford half marathon, again all the latest stats are on the website as are all the results from races every week thanks to the very dedicated Andrew Burgess.

Traviss watch – in April Traviss was inducted into the Marathon Maniacs Club for doing 50 Marathons in 1 year being only the 77 person to do this well done Traviss, on that note every time I log onto Facebook he’s done more concluding this week numbers 79, 80 & 81 only 19 to go.

The new Tri section competed in the first race on May 15th well done to all with more happening this week end good luck to all.

Earlybirds is still going from strength to strength thanks to Denise and all her helpers.

As you can see everyone has been busy, good luck in all the forthcoming events and keep up to date on the messageboard.

Cheers, Floyd

TRI SECTION

Update from Michael White.
Maidstone Harriers Triathlon Section – Meeting Notes Wed 26th Jan 2011

The meeting was very successful with a lot of interest and I hope a good start to something great within the club. Here are a few notes on ideas generated.

Training / Instruction sessions
Specific sessions will be set up occasionally to start with and hopefully expand to fill demand, such as:

- Kit advice
- Skills / techniques / transition
- Race tips
- Bike maintenance
- Pool swimming sessions / coaching
- Open water swimming (April onwards – Leybourne lakes)
- Club rides / run/bike/run sessions

As you know we are lucky enough to have Kevin Holt on-board who is very keen to help us with coaching sessions and advice. Kevin is an experienced triathlete and coach with a wealth of knowledge that I am sure we can benefit hugely from. Many of you already know Ian Forrest, another extremely experienced triathlete, who will also be available as a great resource within the club.

We are looking into affiliation to the BTF (British Triathlon Federation) benefits of which include public liability insurance and reduced individual membership fees.
More info on this later.

Club Developments
To better assist with communication I would like to get a section setup on our website and something within the message board. Kevin and Ian are willing to monitor and respond to a Q&A section on the message board with tips and advice etc.
I also plan to set up a club email account which I will monitor and have this posted on our website for people to contact us.
I would also like to take a register of people within the club interested in Triathlon and be able to email them directly on relevant matters etc.

Tri suits: Ian has found the following website which have good deals at the moment:

http://www.activinstinct.com/sale/triathlon-sale/

That’s all for now. More soon.

Mike

LONDON MARATHON COACH/MARSHALS

The marshaling is now on a reserve list and the coach is nearly full, get your name down quick.

Hope to see you there

Cheers Floyd

Wednesday January 26th

POST CHRISTMAS BASH

A most enjoyable night was had by all on Saturday thanks Paula & Shelly for organising this, well done and roll on next years.

RUNNERS OF THE YEAR

If you haven't voted yet you only have until 9th February, please either let Paula or me know ASAP.

Michael White has put this together about the intended TRI section to the club….

Maidstone Harriers Triathlon Section

There is a growing interest in Triathlon within the club and for some time now we have been thinking of starting up a section within the club to cater for it. We have a few very experienced members that have been taking part in the sport for a long time and some of us have just started out. Myself and Sharon Barnett took part in our very first sprint Tri last year and loved it and plan many more. Like most we are not going to break any records but it is simply great fun. It's also a great spectator sport as you can watch the swim and several transitions before the finish. This year there are 11 Harriers taking part in the East Grinstead Sprint Tri in May.

This coming Wednesday (26th) we will be holding a meeting at the club after the run (approx 9:15) and hope that all those members interested will be able to be there and contribute. We have been approached by Kevin Holt, an experienced Triathlete and trainer who is interested in helping us with advice, instruction and possibly running some new training sessions if there is sufficient interest. Kevin came and ran with us a couple of weeks ago and will be with us for our meeting. He is very keen to help us and I hope we will be able to make the most of his experience.
We will be talking about affiliation to the BTU (British Triathlon Federation) and mostly what YOU would like to get out of the section.

I will minute the meeting to keep everyone informed so don't worry if you can't make it and I'd be interested to hear your opinion.

Mike White

Note: East Grinstead Sprint Tri is now full and entries closed.

Cheers,

Mike.
